Wildcat works with 500 young adults each year by helping them to complete
their education, to plan careers and to test out their interests through
internships.
Wildcat runs two school-based programs that include both middle and
high school students. These programs work with over 100 youth each year
that have been suspended from other schools and provide them with a structured
and supportive environment in which they can continue their educations.
We also provide after school homework assistance to extend academic support
for these students beyond school hours.
Another of our school-based programs focuses on over 100 young adults
who have returned to complete their education. This initiative helps
the youth to overcome obstacles to completing their studies while at
the same time providing job readiness and career exploration opportunities
that lead to meaningful employment. We use internships throughout the
year to help them gain valuable skills in preparation for the workforce
upon graduation.
Outside of school, Wildcat works with up to 200 young people each summer
to help them explore different careers and work environments, as well
as to develop strong work habits. The youth are placed in summer jobs
in a variety of occupations such as clerical and office workers, as retail
clerks and as outside maintenance workers within neighborhood improvement
projects. Many of the youth participate in multiple summers and return
to the same employers.
Wildcat has also launched an internship and asset building program that
engages up to 90 young people from the Hunts Point/Longwood section of
the Bronx. We match the youth with an exciting 12 week internships where
they gain work experience, create networks, gain practical experience
and develop communication skills. Outcomes include full-time employment
and a return to education.
